Located on Jersey’s south-east coast, the parish of Grouville is one of history, activity and idyllic charm. Home to the island’s famous Long Beach, the picturesque village of Gorey and the best Jersey golf, Grouville is the perfect destination for an island getaway or a day’s visit. Just a stone’s throw from the vibrant capital of St Helier, Grouville has close proximity to Jersey’s central hub in addition to offering an abundance of shopping, dining and attractions within the parish.
Grouville Historic Sites
An area of significance in Jersey’s history, Grouville has numerous historic sites and locations to discover. Standing on the outskirts of Grouville and overlooking the beautiful Gorey harbour, Mont Orgueil Castle is an iconic symbol of Jersey’s national identity. The castle is one of the finest examples of a Mediaeval fortress in the world and proudly watches over the island’s eastern coastline. Visitors can tour the castle, exploring its walls and grounds, discovering hidden tunnels and secret towers. At the opposite end of the parish’s coastline, La Rocque Harbour is situated on Jersey’s south-eastern tip. Here you will find Seymour Tower, a coastal defence tower sitting 2km offshore. During low tide, visitors can walk across to Seymour Tower, however, due to the unpredictable tidal range in this area, visits must be as part of a guided tour and should not be taken independently. Seymour Tower is also now part of Jersey Heritage’s selection of holiday lets allowing visitors to stay in a historic building.
Heading inland, Grouville is home to La Hougue Bie Museum, a neolithic site featuring a mediaeval chapel, archaeological museum and the preserved passage grave which is one of the ten oldest buildings in the world. Grouville Other Points of Interest
Not only is Grouville home to numerous historic sites, the town offers a wealth of other attractions and things to do.
Grouville is a tamer relative to St Helier’s buzzing heart with casual shopping, relaxed dining and low-key nightlife. Nightlife in particular is at a slower pace and centres around local pubs and coastal bars. Here you can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere, Jersey-made alcohol and views of boats bobbing on the water.
Dining in Grouville is a particular highlight featuring some of the best restaurants on the island. With fabulous coastal positioning and stunning views, al fresco dining in Grouville is very popular whilst menus boast phenomenal seafood including the best catch of the day. The village of Gorey is a highlight for food lovers as the centre of the island’s food heritage. Gorey is the location where the first Jersey royal potatoes were grown and Jersey’s fishing industry was sparked after a discovery of oyster beds off the coast of Gorey.
Shopping in Grouville is more traditional and authentic with less brands and more independent retailers. You can find exceptional artisan food stalls, charming fashion boutiques and stalls selling unique souvenirs and handmade ceramics.
In the heart of Grouville, Queen’s Valley Reservoir is the newest Jersey reservoir and is open to the public. Several walking routes take a circular tour around the reservoir and are just shy of 2 miles long. The reservoir is a great place for wildlife spotting with an array of species inhabiting the area and a wealth of flora and fauna.
Grouville Sport and Events
With its coastal positioning, many of Grouville’s sporting activities take place on the water. In addition to the self-hire watersports that can be enjoyed at Long Beach, Grouville is renowned for sailing. Every year, one of the world’s oldest regattas is held in Gorey with a variety of competitive events. The regatta is a key element of Jersey’s history, culture and is one of the most celebrated events on Jersey’s calendar.
However, one of the parish’s main sporting highlights is not based on water. Home to the Royal Jersey Golf Club, Grouville boasts the island’s best golf course with incredible facilities and unrivalled views. The club has a rich history of over 140 years and players can enjoy a backdrop of exquisite scenery during a round with magnificent views of Mont Orgueil Castle, Gorey harbour and extending to the French coast.
On the island’s calendar, one of Jersey’s largest charity events is the Gorey Fete. Taking place every August, the event attracts over 8,000 guests and features a fun fair, beach games, spaghetti eating contest and a grand fireworks finale.
Grouville Transportation
Grouville is most easily explored by car with excellent signposting and easy parking locations. If you choose not to travel to Jersey with your own vehicle, there are multiple car hire options across the island including at the airport, ferry terminal and in the island’s central locations.
Alternatively, Jersey’s public transportation system has excellent connections to, from and around Grouville. LibertyBus services 1, 1A and 2 run from St Helier to Gorey Pier with varying routes through Grouville. You can obtain bus timetables online, at Liberation Station or from your hotel reception.
You can also enjoy picturesque walks in Grouville with numerous scenic walking trails throughout the parish. Walks vary in ability and distance, suitable for both avid hikers and casual holidaymakers.
