What Makes Inside Jerseys Parish Halls So Special?
Divided into twelve parishes, Jersey is an island where its parish halls are a big feature. Each hall is a centre point for the community and is unique in not only how they operate but also in their appearance. While some are modest, others are opulent in their design, but regardless, they are iconic symbols of the community that boast a history and heritage centuries old. From handling everyday parish administration tasks to upholding a unique local justice system and hosting community events, parish halls are where island life in Jersey is organised, celebrated and quietly upheld.
Jersey Parishes
Jersey is home to twelve different parishes, dating back to the 11th century and contributing to the rich heritage and unique society that the island has known for centuries. In the island’s first census in 1331, it was clear that the parishes were already well established. While St Ouen is the largest, St Helier is the most populated with the three most southern parishes, St Helier, St Clement and St Saviour rapidly growing since the late 1700s. The parishes have unique crests that evolved to commemorate the visit by King George V and Queen Mary in 1921. Each parish revolves around the Parish Church with the head of the Parish Church selected by the Crown. The parishes also have an assembly which is an important part of the operation in each parish. Attendees nominated officers of the Parish Council who are then based in the parish hall which is another integral part of each parish. A point of contact for parishioners and businesses, the parish hall is the one stop shop for information, licensing and other enquiries directly related to the parish.

What Does a Jersey Parish Hall do?
In each parish, the parish hall is a central hub for all council-related matters within that parish. Functioning in the same respect as a UK town hall, the parish hall is the go-to destination for all matters that impact the parishioners and local businesses. It serves as the administrative and community hub for that individual parish, playing an important role in the local governance, services and community life. Led by the elected Connétable, who is nominated at a public assembly, this Constable is the parish’s point of contact between the parish and the State, with a seat in Jersey’s parliament, the States Assembly.
The parish hall acts as the local government office for the parish, handling taxes, licensing, certifications and electoral rolls. It is a management hub for public works, services and infrastructure, planning the maintenance of public roads, signage and other parish maintenance. It is also a base for the Honorary Police, a volunteer policing system unique to Jersey and serves as a community-based alternative to court for minor offences. In addition, the parish hall is an organiser for community and social services, supporting welfare services and planning community events. It is the organisation hub for community events, such as parish lunches, fêtes and seasonal activities and provides meeting rooms for clubs, charities and parish groups.
St Helier Town Hall
Known as the ‘Town Hall’ rather than the parish hall due to its location in the island’s capital, St Helier Town Hall is the central hub for the largest population on the island, also managing some island-wide operations, including issuing Jersey driving licenses. It is an organiser for some of the island’s biggest events, including the central Liberation Day celebrations, town markets and the Parish of St Helier Tea Dance. The hall also boasts four meeting rooms of varying sizes that can be hired by charities and community groups.
St Saviour Parish Hall
A much smaller hall than neighbouring St Helier, St Saviour Parish Hall is heavily community-based in addition to its governance and administration roles. Nestled in a family-oriented community, the parish hall is a home base for multiple scout groups, bowls clubs and La Cloche, the quarterly Parish magazine.
St Clement Parish Hall
St Clement is a parish that is big into celebrating and honouring the island’s history and heritage. Throughout the year, the parish hall hosts numerous events and exhibitions documenting and celebrating various historical events. The largest is Liberation Day, when multiple events are organised, including family fun days, tea parties and memorabilia exhibitions. Home to a slightly more senior community, the hall hosts bridge clubs, flower clubs and two W.I. organisations.
Grouville Parish Hall
Grouville Parish strives to serve the community and welcomes anything that is beneficial to all residents, such as the Jersey Mobile Library. It hosts numerous family groups from Tuesday Tots to Gorey Youth Project and is a central place where parishioners, particularly younger ones, frequent.
St Martin Parish Hall
The rural parish of St Martin is surrounded by a breathtaking coastline and overflowing with rich history. With Mont Orgueil overlooking the idyllic Gorey harbour, the beauty of St Martin is in its unique charm. The hall itself has limited operational hours, opening the venue up for hire by a diverse range of local community groups. With something to offer every interest and age range, St Martin Parish Hall is designed for the parishioners.
Trinity Parish Hall
With many community-based groups and activities based at Trinity Parish Hall, this is a parish that is truly led by its parishioners. Directly opposite the Youth and Community Centre, Trinity has one of the strongest community spirits on the island. Boasting plenty of open space and a rural setting, the Trinity lifestyle is nothing short of idyllic.
St John Parish Hall
Home to the picturesque bay of Bonne Nuit, St John is a parish where there is a strong focus on water-based activity. A base for the Bonne Nuit Boat Owners association and an organiser of the Bonne Nuit Harbour Festival, St John Parish Hall is a big collaborator with local groups and organisations.
St Mary Parish Hall
As the least populated parish, St Mary Parish Hall has limited opening hours. However, the community spirit remains strong in this parish and with the Youth & Community Centre just steps from the parish hall, there is always something going on. A rural spot on the northern coastline, the parish hall also welcomes the Jersey Mobile Library.
St Ouen Parish Hall
On the north west coast of Jersey, St Ouen is a picturesque parish where beach lifestyle is strong. Incentivising new home owners to invest in the parish, St Ouen is one of the island’s biggest supporters of affordable homes for first-time buyers. The parish hall, meanwhile, hosts many family-friendly groups and events, including the St Ouen Youth Club, sports groups and the 1st Jersey Scout Group.
St Peter Parish Hall
Boasting a farming community and a beautiful valley, St Peter is a scenic parish that is primarily countryside. Nestled in the heart of St Peter’s Village, St Peter has an aesthetic parish hall with a charming country facade. The only parish touching two of Jersey’s coastlines and home to the island’s airport, St Peter is considered to be the gateway to Jersey.
St Brelade Parish Hall
Arguably the most beautiful parish hall on the island, St Brelade Parish Hall is a work of art. In addition to being a stunning piece of architecture on the island, it is the central hub for one of the island’s largest parishes. It hosts the largest number of clubs and associations on the island, with diverse niches from Jersey Astronomy Club to Jersey Amateur Radio Society. It also regularly hosts family fun days and senior tea parties, providing events that cater to every group of parishioners.
St Lawrence Parish Hall
The centre of the island, St Lawrence, is a parish of strong heritage, home to some of the island’s biggest cultural attractions, including the Jersey War Tunnels and Hamptonne Country Life Museum. The parish also has a strong faith community, and the hall hosts a wide range of community groups that cater to all ages.
